hypocaust-1

The Romans were pioneers in the use of central heating in their homes and public baths, using a system called “hypocaust”. This ancient form of underfloor heating involved an empty space under the floors and in the walls where hot air and smoke from a furnace would pass through, warming the room above. This system was particularly popular in colder regions of the Empire like Britain. Wealthy Romans could enjoy warm floors and walls during cold periods, a luxury that would not become common again until modern times.
